Top tips to deal with stress

Stress can make us feel tired, tense and overwhelmed.  When we feel like this, our normal behaviour changes; we are less patient, become snappy or even angry.  This is because stress triggers our body into ‘fight or flight’ mode to prepare us to either stay and deal with a threat or run away to safety; adrenaline starts pumping, our heart beats faster and our blood pressure rises.

The problem is that our bodies are not built to maintain the fight or flight response for long. If we don’t do anything to stop this, we increase the risk of damaging our long-term health so it’s really important to get stress levels down:

  1. Stop and breathe
Take a deep breath, filling your lungs. Hold for five seconds and breathe out. Repeat this until you feel your breathing return to a normal level

  2. Go for a walk
Get away from it all for 5 minutes.  A walk round the block will do. Pay attention to your surroundings and take notice of the sounds, sights and smells around you

  3. Plug in – tune out
Listen to some music, a podcast or a story. Tuning into something else gives your mind a chance to rest

  4. Call a mate
Chat to friends. Getting something off your chest and talking it through with a friend can make all the difference

  5. Do something that makes you sweat
Exercise releases endorphins in your body, giving you a natural high – a brisk walk, running or playing five-a-side with your mates  – any exercise will help
