What kind of care do I need | Ben Care
Help and advice

What type of care do you need?

Looking for the right care can be overwhelming, even just trying to understand what type of care you may need.

Across Ben Care homes, we will work with you, your relatives and health providers to find the right type of care for you. Together, we'll create a personalised care plan based on your needs, but also your preferences and personality. As your needs change over time, the care we provide will evolve in line with your requirements, so you can be confident that you will always be well looked-after.

Residential care

Residential care is for people who need help with basic daily tasks such as washing and dressing, medication and preparing meals. It’s different from nursing care in that, while residents may have health issues, they are not in need of clinical nursing care on a regular basis.

People living in Ben’s care homes have individual care plans that are unique to them. These plans include details about hobbies, interests and needs to ensure every resident is able to live a happy and fulfilling life while safe and secure, receiving the care and support they need.

Our excellent facilities, including beautiful gardens and outdoor spaces and our busy activities programmes allow all our residents to live well every day. Residents are free to choose how they spend their days including when to get up and when to go to bed, which is important for their sense of autonomy.

All our residents have their own spacious, private ensuite rooms and are encouraged to decorate and furnish their room with personal items, so it feels like home.

Food is very important for our residents, both nutritionally and as a chance to socialise and enjoy each other’s company.  All meals are freshly prepared on-site, with regular feedback from our residents to our chefs to ensure our menus meet people’s needs. Because our food is freshly prepared on each of our sites, we are able accommodate any special diets.

Nursing care

Nursing care is for people who need additional medical support and may have complex medication regimes and multiple health conditions. Our highly trained nurses are on hand 24 hours a day, seven days a week to ensure our nursing care residents are closely monitored and their conditions are well managed. Our nurses are permanent Ben employees, we do not rely on district nurses or external providers, and this ensures our residents consistently receive excellent care.

With detailed care plans to ensure each individual’s health needs are met, we ensure their emotional and social needs are met by getting to know their interests and hobbies so we can integrate them into their daily life where possible.

Ben’s Town Thorns and Lynwood care homes operate the Best Life Model of care which ensures your care package develops to continue to provide the right support as your loved one’s needs evolve and change.  Because nursing staff are integrated into our care teams throughout the care home, residents can stay in their familiar room, with their familiar care teams and the nursing care will come to them, rather than having to transfer to a different unit.   The Best Life Model has also enabled our carers to be trained in basic nursing duties, freeing up our nurses who now have more time for each resident, which means much quicker access to nursing care as it is needed.

Dementia care

If your loved one has dementia, it becomes increasingly hard to care for them and you may reach a point when you’re worried for their safety and no longer feel able to look after them. This is when specialist dementia care home becomes the best option, both for them and for you.

Our specialist dementia care teams are trained in the Newcastle Model for Dementia Care which helps them understand what drives the challenging behaviour sometimes seen with dementia and makes them better able to communicate with residents in these situations and resolve them.

All Ben care homes have extensive experience of looking after people with dementia. We engage in life story work where we build a lifelong picture of your loved one’s history, interests and passions, relatives and other important people, to help us create meaningful care and activities that your loved one with enjoy.  We provide specific activities designed to support physical, mental and emotional health for those with dementia.

Our care homes are safe and secure, including secure outdoor spaces where our residents with dementia can enjoy fresh air and sunshine.
