‘Know your numbers week’: Promoting health checks in the workplace

It’s Blood Pressure UK’s ‘Know Your Numbers Week’, so we have put together a piece on promoting health checks in the workplace. An estimated 137.3 million working days were lost due to sickness or injury in 2016 (ONS), and in 2014 over half of women and nearly two thirds of men were overweight or obese (NHS).

Promoting good physical health and wellbeing among employees can reduce their levels of sickness, increase energy levels and boost levels of concentration. Healthier workforces are undeniably more productive and employers that recognise the importance of their employees’ health and wellbeing are also likely to have better reputations and employee retention rates.

You don’t have to make huge changes to promote physical wellbeing at work and encourage colleagues to make positive changes. In fact, we recently launched the BenHealthCheck (Your physical MOT) for automotive employers to help them do just this! The new BenHealthCheck is designed to determine someone’s general physical health using four key tests:

  • Resting heart rate
  • blood pressure
  • BMI
  • body fat percentage

Participants can compare their test results to national health guidelines to gain a clear understanding of their current health. They are supported with information and practical tips on how to improve their health and wellbeing.

We work together to create a tailored programme of awareness, training and income generating activities in support of Ben, to suit individual business needs. Our Ben4Business partnerships are based around four key programme elements – BenAware, BenatWork, BenTraining and BackingBen. Visit www.ben.org.uk/Ben4Business to find out more.
