Celebrating Excellence In Care:

Four Ben Carers Are Regional Finalists At The Great British Care Awards

The care teams at all three of Ben’s care homes have reason to celebrate with four colleagues recognised for their achievements at The Great British Care Awards, which celebrate excellence across the care sector.  An independent panel of judges interviewed each award nominee and the deserving finalists, with Ben colleagues, attended black-tie awards dinners in their region.

And the finalists are…

Dozie Okonkwo has been a valued member of our Lynwood Court Care Home team for four years and we are delighted that he has been recognised as a finalist in the Care Home Worker Award category.  Dozie has a proactive approach to care, finding out about residents’ needs and working to adapt details of their care to suit them. He never tires of trying new approaches to ensure residents love living in their home and are treated with the utmost dignity and respect. Dozie said that he is simply “living his best life and treating people how he would want to be treated”, but despite his modesty it’s very clear to all his colleagues and managers that he is a shining star at our Lynwood Court Care Home.

Based at our Town Thorns Care Home, Debbie Humphries was shortlisted for the Palliative Care/End of Life Award, which is a superb achievement.  Since Debbie has been working as Nurse Lead for Ben Care at our Town Thorns Care Home, she has tirelessly sought to get it right for residents, championing person centred care, a multi-disciplinary approach and advanced care plans.  “I believe in allowing residents to continue living their lives with us how they wish to, and going the extra mile to ensure their dignity is upheld until the very final moments,” said Debbie. “I make sure that everything that matters most to them is taken care of.”

Finally, we are thrilled that Stacey Kerr, our activities manager was a finalist in the Care Home Activity Organiser Award category.  Stacey lights up the room with her energy and creativity, adapting activities to suit residents and building rapport with them to ensure that no one is left out. Stacy goes above and beyond what is asked of her, using her tenacity to build relationships with local businesses who have donated items for our activities. “I love my job and seeing resident’s faces glow with happiness but it’s so important to be there for someone and appreciate the more difficult memories too,” said Stacey. “If I see a resident who is feeling a bit rubbish, I always say, ‘Do you fancy a cuppa?’ - I am always there for them.”

Lorraine Lynch, Head of Care Operations, Ben Care said, “We are so proud of our care colleagues for the support they provide to our residents each and every day, so it’s lovely to have their hard work recognised by the Great British Care Awards.  All four of our finalists are exceptional people who, through their hard work and passion for care, make a real difference by improving our residents’ and home care clients’ lives.  It’s also testament to the culture here at Ben where we are always striving to do better across all three of our care homes. Congratulations and thank you to all the finalists!“
