Car Dealer Magazine’s Bangers4Ben event 2017 has raised over £56,000 for Ben, the not-for-profit organisation that partners with the automotive industry to provide support for life to its people and their family dependants. This annual sell-out rally event has now been running for nine years and has become a highlight of the automotive industry events calendar.
Bangers4Ben is an epic road trip on which 45 teams drive to and from a different location somewhere in Europe each year. Each team of two buys an old banger for less than £750, paints or decals it and then selects a fancy dress outfit to drive in. This year’s event theme was ‘The Alpine Special’ as the chosen destination was the Swiss Alps, which saw teams driving some of the most scenic roads that Switzerland has to offer.
Afterwards, the cars are sold at auction and the money raised contributes to the final total for Ben. The car that raised the most profit at auction for Ben was Blackhorses’ Mercedes-Benz Safety Car which sold for an impressive £2,400. In addition, the Auto Trader team’s car called the ‘big cheese’ raised over £5,000 in additional sponsorship. Some of the wackiest bangers this year included Promotive James Bond Lotus, Geoff Cox Derby’s Mad Max and the Plan Insurance Alpine Chalet. The ‘Best Car’ prize went to the AA team who transformed their Volvo into a tank! The tank is being sold on eBay – click here to view or bid.
Gemma Heathcote and Amanda Massey from GardX were awarded the Fancy Dress prize for their alpine-themed outfits which changed daily and included skiwear, milkmaids, cows and lederhosen! The Best Tweet award also went to the GardX team for their carpool karaoke which saw the pair recording songs with various ‘celebrities’ over the trip, producing a fantastic video – click here to view.
Andy Entwistle, Managing Director, from Car Dealer magazine publisher Blackball Media, said: “The teams had an absolute blast this year travelling to the Alps and back in their bangers! We’re really proud that Bangers4Ben continues to be a sell-out event and is known as one of the major highlights of the UK automotive events calendar. Yet all this fun is for a serious cause as the donations go to Ben, to help their crucial work supporting those in need who work, or have worked, in the UK automotive industry and their family dependents.”
Kelly Neal, Head of Events at Ben, said: “We were really impressed with this year’s entries – in fact, we are amazed by the creativity and effort that the teams put into transforming their bangers every year! We’re delighted with the impressive fundraising amount this year and we can’t thank all of the teams and their sponsors enough for helping us to support colleagues in our industry.”
