How to write a great cover letter

When you apply for a job, your cover letter is your first opportunity to make a good impression. It sits alongside your CV and gives employers a sense of your personality, motivation, and suitability for the role.

A well-written cover letter can help your application stand out, showing that you’ve done your homework and understand what the employer is looking for.

What is a cover letter?

A cover letter is a short, tailored letter you send with your CV when applying for a job. It introduces you to the employer and explains why you’re interested in the role and what makes you a strong candidate.

Each cover letter should be customised for the job you’re applying for, avoid copying and pasting the same letter for every application. Recruiters can spot a generic letter instantly!

How long should a cover letter be?

Most cover letters should be:

  • No longer than one side of A4
  • Three to five short paragraphs in length

Some job adverts may specify a maximum length, especially for senior or specialist roles.

If you’re applying by email, type your cover letter directly in the body of the email (not as an attachment). You can draft it in Word first to check the length, spelling, and grammar, then copy and paste it into the email. Always use your spelling and grammar tools to avoid simple mistakes — they matter more than you think.

How to address your letter

Whenever possible, address your cover letter to a specific person — for example, the hiring manager or recruiter. This shows attention to detail and makes your letter feel more personal.

If you can’t find a name, use a professional greeting such as:

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear Recruitment Team,
  • Dear Sir or Madam,

Tip: If you use someone’s name, end with “Yours sincerely.” If you don’t, end with “Yours faithfully.”

What to include in a cover letter

Your cover letter should be concise, relevant, and enthusiastic. Think of it as a short story about why you’re the right fit for the role.

Final tips for success

Tailor every letter

  • Use the job description to guide what you include.
  • Keep it professional: Avoid slang, emojis, or overly casual language.
  • Be specific: Give clear examples rather than general statements.
  • Check and double-check: Typos or errors can make a poor impression.
  • Be confident but polite: Show enthusiasm without overselling yourself.
