Cheap dates – 14 of the best Valentine’s Day ideas on a budget

a romantic couple on Valentine's Day

By Leila Moss, Communications & Campaigns Manager, Ben

As Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, we’ve put together our top tips on how to celebrate with your other half on a budget – after all, we are in the middle of our financial campaign!

Staying in

  1. Dinner date

Supermarkets like M&S do some tasty meal deals with a main, side and dessert as well as a bottle of wine thrown in, all for £10 – get in there early though as they fly off the shelves! Dine in style by creating some mood lighting with lanterns and candles.

  1. Memories video

You could create a video of your memories together, using your best photos and videos, sit back and relax with a bottle of your favourite wine. You can use free online slideshow sites such as Animoto, Picovico and Smilebox.

  1. Cook up a storm

If you enjoy spending time in the kitchen, you could try cooking or even baking together. BBC Good Food has some scrummy-looking recipes for two and lots of romance-inspired baking ideas.

  1. Movie night

Get the popcorn ready! Valentine’s Day is the ideal opportunity to sit down and watch that film you’ve both wanted to see for a while. Or, if you’re stuck on ideas for feel-good romantic flicks, Fandango has put together a list that you might want to check out! To really show you care, take your movie night snacks to the next level with these ideas from Taste.com. We love the sound of the potato skin nachos, pizza twists and the fairy meringue kisses!

  1. Spa day @home

Buy some bubble bath, scented candles and incense and have a couples’ DIY spa day! You can use products you already have at home such as body scrubs and moisturisers or you can even make some. WebMD has some fabulous recipes for natural home-made lotions, scrubs and masks.

Going out

  1. Alternative day

It’s often more expensive to go out on Valentine’s Day itself as some restaurants, pubs and bars tend to hike their prices up. You could always celebrate on a different day – or the weekend after without the worry of work in the morning!

  1. Booked to go out?

If you’ve already booked to go out for a meal, check whether you can get the best deal once you’re there. Websites like Groupon, Moneysavingexpert, Vouchercloud and Vouchercodes have good discount deals and freebies at various restaurants!

  1. Experience some culture

While museums can have steep ticket prices, many have free or discounted days or hours during off peak times so you can be cultured on a budget. For example, a lot of museums in London are free including the National Gallery and the Natural History Museum. See more in this article by Time Out.

  1. Sight-seeing on wheels

As cheesy as it sounds, renting a tandem bike can be an adventure for a super co-ordinated couple who want a different take on a taking the scenic route. You can rent them online at an affordable rate.

  1. Free concerts

They say the best things in life are free! There are a number of free concerts in London and in Birmingham. A number of small towns across the country also hold free concerts – check out your local newspaper or try searching online.

  1. Brewery or vineyard tour

Some local brewery or vineyard offer free tours (or they’re very reasonably priced), and you’ll get some free drinks, as well as leave with knowledge you can impress your friends with! Check out UK Brewery Tours for some ideas – tickets start at around £15.

Gift ideas

  1. Sweet treats

Nothing says love like baked goods! BBC Good Food has some great edible gift ideas such as fudge, fortune cookies and lollipops for that special someone in your life.

  1. Photo collage

Use a free app like Collageable or Picmonkey to create a collage of your favourite photos that you can print and, if you’re a fan of PDA, share on social media.

  1. Personalised card

Receiving a card from your other half is always special and online retailers like Funkypigeon and Moonpig have some great designs which don’t cost the earth. You can personalise them with photos and your own words and messages. Put your order in now and you’ll receive them in time for the big V day!

  1. Gift experiences

Vouchercodes is currently offering some great discounts, including 23% off orders from Buyagift (which also offers other gift experiences such as spa days, afternoon tea and meals out). Get in there quick though! Also check out Quidco and Topcashback to see whether you can get cash back on any purchases you make.
